The Cause: Education Opportunities for Marginalized IDP Children in Somalia

IDRF Montreal has chosen to raise funds for a specific project run by IDRF (International Development and Relief Foundation)  to support education opportunities for marginalized IDP (internally displaced person) children in Somalia.

"The aim of the project is to create education opportunities for marginalized IDP children in Somalia. The project will ensure equal access to girls and boys and will reduce the illiteracy level among the parents by providing them with literacy classes (reading, writing and numeracy skills). By involving parents and other adult relatives in the project we will ensure that any reluctance to allow children (especially girls) access to school is overcome. Parents will be able to experience the value of education for themselves and will in effect create a supportive network at home for their children."

All proceeds from the IDRF Book Fair, held November 6th, including book sales, food sales, and MGear merchandise will be donated to support this specific project through IDRF.

Show your support by donating your books, and joining us at the IDRF Book Fair!

For more information on this project, read more on IDRF's official website here.

Bonjour Montreal!

International Development and Relief Foundation (IDRF) is making it's way to Montreal!

Mission Statement: IDRF (International Development and Relief Foundation) is a registered Canadian non-profit organization, dedicated to empowering the disadvantaged people of the world through emergency relief and participatory development programs based on the Islamic principles of human dignity, self-reliance and social justice. -IDRF website
Based in Toronto, IDRF has chapters across Canada, but to date does not have an official chapter in Montreal. This is a great opportunity to contribute to IDRF's mission, while working towards the goal of establishing an official IDRF Montreal Chapter in the very near future.

If you haven't heard of IDRF already, now is the perfect opportunity to read more about the organization at their official website idrf.ca.

If you happen to stumble upon any unwanted books, set them aside, because we want them! Books can be donated at our drop off sites starting Sunday, August 8, 2010, so just hang onto those books a little while longer. Two drop sites have been confirmed to date, with additional sites to be announced soon. Stay tuned for more information on those.

Our first fund-raising event will be the IDRF Book Fair to be held Saturday, November 6th, 2010, so mark it down on your calendars!

Want to get involved? Young or old, we would greatly appreciate anyone interested in volunteering. You can use the comments field below or email us at idrfmontreal@gmail.com to get in touch with us.
